Our family loves these super simple blueberry smoothies. It’s a perfect breakfast or snack that adults and kids will love (my toddler loves these smoothies). You can even make a big batch, freeze it, and enjoy these delicious smoothies another day (tips are below).
Key Ingredients
Frozen blueberries: For the best smoothies, use frozen blueberries. I especially love frozen wild blueberries, which give the smoothie in our photos that bright, vivid purple color. Fresh blueberries make smoothies really thick like jelly (they are full of pectin, which freezing reduces). Banana: I always add banana to my smoothies since it makes them super creamy. Frozen bananas are best if you have some. Half an orange: I love oranges in smoothies, too, and use them when making our basic banana smoothie and this strawberry banana smoothie. They add extra vitamin C and tropical flavor. Milk (dairy or non-dairy): You need a little liquid to help everything blend. I usually use non-dairy milk, but use whatever you have on hand. Water works in a pinch, too. Optional: I love adding nut butter (try almond butter or peanut butter), hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flaxseed meal.
How to Make a Blueberry Smoothie
To make blueberry smoothies, I add the frozen blueberries, banana, orange, and a splash of milk or water to a blender and then blend until smooth. For an icy cold smoothie, throw in a handful of ice or use frozen fruits. Enjoy your smoothies straight away, or save them for later. You can keep this smoothie in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours (I use a mason jar with its lid). The ingredients may separate over time, but you can shake the jar before serving. You can also freeze blueberry smoothies! I add my smoothie to a freezer-safe bag and squeeze out as much air as possible. Then I freeze them. They last in the freezer for 1 to 2 months. About an hour before needing the smoothie, take it out of the freezer.
How to Freeze Fruit for Smoothies
You can freeze your fresh blueberries for these smoothies. I promise freezing makes for a better smoothie (especially, when it comes to blueberries). You can also freeze bananas, which makes your smoothie more creamy. You can even prepare and freeze smoothie packs for a grab-and-blend smoothie option. To freeze bananas and blueberries (or other fruit) for smoothies: 1 medium ripe banana or use 1 cup frozen banana slices Half of a medium orange, peeled and quartered 3/4 cup to 1 cup milk, dairy or non-dairy 1 teaspoon chia seeds 1 teaspoon hemp seeds 1 teaspoon flax seeds 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup 2Turn the blender on and blend until creamy and smooth. If the smoothie is too thick, add a bit more milk. Add a few ice cubes and blend until smooth for an icy cold smoothie.
